Marco Curiale (b. 1998, Turin. He/him) was selected through an Open Call to spend one-month residency in Gothenburg. It gave him the chance to build on his research on visual short-circuits, drawing from, though not exclusively, animated Swedish folklore.
Inspired by the surrounding environment, his residency was prolific, leading SWIT to help him organize an Open Studio towards the end of his stay, titled “Troll”. In the artist’s words: ”The troll is an error in the landscape, a deviation, a force that makes unstable what appears immobile and undermines trust in the categories through which we organize reality”. The playful disobedience of Pippi Longstocking and the unquestioned sense of otherness in the Moomins embody different representations of trolling, making them central figures in the works.
He almost entirely worked with archival material from the studio, somehow altering – or trolling – the state and purpose of found objects.
SWIT supported Marco in expanding his network through on-site experiences such as cultural events, day trips into nature, and delicious dinners! He also had access to Göteborgs Bildverkstad, and had his accommodation and travel expenses covered.
