This is an open call to invite 2 ITALY-BASED creatives working in photography for a fully-funded residency in 2026.
DEADLINE: January 15, 2026 at 23:59
DATES
Depending on what you work with, you can choose between:
- 20 April – 3 May, 2026
- Only for writers, curators, and critics working in photography.
- This is the period where people start to wake up after winter, with different opening happening around town and with the sun coming back to warm up the city.
- 1 – 30 June, 2026
- Only for artists working in photography.
- This is the beginning of a not-so-warm summer in Gothenburg: the days are long and bright, but rain is still very common. The city is quiet, as many people are on holiday and not much is happening culturally. This period also includes Midsummer, Sweden’s biggest holiday where almost everything shuts down, and many locals leave the city to celebrate in the countryside. If you are interested in networking, June is not the ideal month.
WHO CAN APPLY
Artists, writers, curators, and critics working in photography and based in Italy (regardless of nationality). This includes also multidisciplinary artists who involve photography as part of their practice.
To get the most out of the residency, the participant must be comfortable communicating in English.
WHAT YOU CAN DO HERE
We welcome process- and research-based projects, with no expectation to produce a final work or to prepare a presentation by the end of the residency. Come as you are, chill, and get inspired by a new place.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Free roundtrip flight Italy-Göteborg
- Monthly pass for local transportation
- Free access to Göteborgs Bildverkstad, collective workshop for image production, with computers and rooms to work in
- A map with interesting places to visit in town (art spaces, second-hand shopping, nature reserves, lakes, etc)
- 20 April – 3 May, 2026:
– Free private accommodation in central Gothenburg. (SWIT does not own any housing, but rents available spaces from fellow artists who are away during the residency period)
– 3.000 SEK as fee to the participant (about 280 €) - 1 – 30 June, 2026:
– Free private 83 m² space including both studio and accommodation within the Konstepidemin collective. See images and read more here.
– 6.000 SEK as fee to the participant (about 550 €) - A lot of nature:)
STUDIO AT KONSTEPIDEMIN
Available only for the artist coming June.
Konstepidemin is a studio area in central Gothenburg, which provides a workplace for over 120 artists from a range of art areas, a platform for artistic projects as well as a meeting place for artists and audiences. They offer an extensive event program with exhibitions, performances, seminars, workshops and more. In June, however, the program is slowly conlcuding.
WORKING SPACE BILDVERKSTAD
Available 24/7 in both the residency periods.
A collective workshop for image production. Here you will have access to equipment for scanning, editing, printing, bookbinding, and much more. There are also private rooms you can book to work in.
You will receive an introduction to the equipment you wish to use, and after that it is your own responsibility to operate it according to your skills. At the moment, we do not have the resources to assist you during production. Access to the space and use of the equipment are free of charge. You will only need to pay for any consumables you use (paper, printing ink, packing materials, etc.).
To see the full equipment list, visit their website.
WHAT TO EXPECT
There are no other participants in residence during your stay, so if you’re not comfortable spending time on your own, this may not be the best residency for you. However, at the co-working space Bildverkstad and the Konstepidemin collective you will certainly meet other creatives.
The residency is self-directed, meaning you are expected to work independently. However, if you wish, you can collaborate with Stefano to structure a program for your time in Gothenburg based on your interests. He will help you get familiar with the city and the local art scene, and can offer suggestions for exploring the surrounding nature.
WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED
Production fee, shipping, subsistence, insurance, assistance during production, documentation.
JURY AND SELECTION PROCESS
Stefano Conti, founder of SWIT
Gloria Pasotti, former artist-in-residence
Giada Renzo, intern at SWIT
In February, four applicants will be invited for an interview. After that, only two will be granted the residency and will receive a binding contract to sign. In March, all the applicants will receive notification of their application results.
We take into consideration the strength and quality of the practice, the relevance of the proposed project to our specific programme, and its feasibility within the chosen time frame.
